Finding a Small Business Accountant in Brisbane

Brisbane’s small businesses lean heavily on trades, construction, health practices, hospitality and professional services, and a good small business accountant usually knows at least one of those well. Several firms on this list say they specialise in particular industries, from building and medical practices to NDIS providers, so it is worth matching the firm to your sector.

The early decisions carry the most weight: whether to trade as a sole trader, company or trust, when to register for GST (once your GST turnover reaches $75,000), and which bookkeeping software to use. As the business grows, the work moves to BAS and payroll reporting, tax planning before 30 June and, for larger employers, Queensland payroll tax once annual taxable wages pass $1.3 million (as at October 2026).

Every firm here is a registered tax agent on the Tax Practitioners Board register, which it needs to lodge company, trust and partnership returns as well as your personal one. Most offer fixed monthly or annual packages and work in Xero or MYOB. Some go further, with virtual CFO reporting, budgets and succession planning for owners preparing to sell.

Common Questions About Brisbane Small Business Accountants

10Brisbane Small Business Accountants compared
4.90Average Google rating
What does a small business accountant do?

A small business accountant sets up and reviews your business structure, registers you for GST and PAYG withholding where needed, prepares and lodges BAS and year-end tax returns, and plans ahead to manage tax before 30 June. Many also set up cloud bookkeeping, handle payroll and super reporting, and give advice on cash flow, pricing and growth.

When does my Brisbane business need to register for GST?

You must register for GST within 21 days of your GST turnover reaching $75,000, measured over the current and previous 11 months or projected over the next 11 months. Taxi and rideshare drivers must register before their first trip, whatever their turnover. An accountant can tell you whether registering early would help, for example to claim GST credits on start-up costs.

Should I run my business as a sole trader, company or trust?

It depends on your profit, risk, family situation and plans for the business. A sole trader setup is cheapest to run, a company limits personal liability and has its own tax rate, and a trust can allow income to be shared among family members. Ask an accountant to model the tax and set-up costs for your numbers before you choose.

Can a bookkeeper or BAS agent replace a small business accountant?

A registered BAS agent can handle bookkeeping, BAS, GST and payroll reporting, which covers much of the routine work. They cannot prepare or lodge income tax returns for the business or its owners, or give structuring and tax planning advice that goes beyond BAS services. Many Brisbane businesses use both, with the accountant reviewing the books at year end.

Does my business have to pay Queensland payroll tax?

Only if its annual Australian taxable wages, counted together with any grouped businesses, pass $1.3 million (as at October 2026). The Queensland Revenue Office sets a rate of 4.75% for employers paying $6.5 million or less. Contractor payments can count as wages in some cases, so ask your accountant to check.

How did you choose these Brisbane small business accountants?

Each firm’s own website shows small business work such as BAS, bookkeeping, structuring and business tax returns. Each is a registered tax agent with a CA ANZ, CPA Australia or IPA principal, has a Brisbane office and holds a Google rating of 4.5 or more from at least 20 reviews. No firm pays for its place.
