Choosing an SMSF Accountant in Brisbane

A self-managed super fund puts you in charge of your retirement savings, and in charge of the paperwork too. Each year the trustees need financial statements prepared, the fund’s annual return lodged with the ATO and an independent audit completed before that return goes in. Many Brisbane trustees hand most of that to an SMSF accountant.

The audit is a separate job by law. It must be done by an approved SMSF auditor registered with ASIC who is independent of the fund, so a good SMSF accountant arranges an outside auditor rather than doing it in-house. The ATO also asks trustees to appoint the auditor at least 45 days before the annual return is due, and the return cannot be lodged until the audit is finished.

The firms on this list say on their own websites that they help with SMSF work such as setting up a fund, keeping its records, preparing the annual accounts and return, and coordinating the audit. Some also advise on funds that hold property or use a corporate trustee. Ask any firm how it handles property valuations and contribution caps before you sign up.

Common Questions About Brisbane SMSF Accountants

9Brisbane SMSF Accountants compared
4.89Average Google rating
What does an SMSF accountant do?

An SMSF accountant keeps the fund’s records, prepares its annual financial statements and member statements, works out the fund’s tax, lodges the SMSF annual return and arranges the independent audit. Many also help set up new funds, track contribution caps, start pensions and report events such as starting a pension to the ATO.

Can my SMSF accountant also audit my fund?

No. The ATO requires every SMSF to be audited each year by an approved SMSF auditor registered with ASIC, and the auditor must be independent of the fund. An accountant who prepares your fund’s accounts should arrange a separate auditor. You can check an auditor on ASIC’s SMSF auditor register.

Does my SMSF need an audit if nothing happened this year?

Yes. The ATO says an SMSF must be audited every year, even if no contributions or payments were made. The audit has to be finished, and the auditor’s report signed, before the fund’s annual return is lodged. If the audit will not be done in time, your accountant can ask the ATO for more time to lodge.

Can an SMSF buy property in Brisbane?

An SMSF can invest in property if its trust deed and investment strategy allow it and the purchase meets the sole purpose test. A fund can buy business real property and lease it to a member’s business at market rent, but it generally cannot buy a home for members or their relatives to live in. Get advice from a licensed adviser before buying.

Do I need a financial adviser as well as an SMSF accountant?

Often, yes. An accountant can handle the fund’s compliance, tax and reporting, but advice on whether to set up an SMSF or which investments to hold is financial product advice, which needs an Australian financial services licence. Ask each firm what it can advise on and whether it works with a licensed adviser.

How did you choose these Brisbane SMSF accountants?

Each firm’s own website describes SMSF accounting work, and each is a registered tax agent with a CA ANZ, CPA Australia or IPA principal, a Brisbane office and a Google rating of 4.5 or more from at least 20 reviews. We do not list SMSF auditors on their own. No firm pays for its place.
