Ten accounting firms worth calling in your city.
We check every firm against the Tax Practitioners Board register, professional body membership and its own Google reviews, then list the ten that pass. Pick your city, see who made the cut, and ask us to put you in touch.
Pick a city, then the kind of help you need
Each city has a general list plus separate lists for personal tax returns, small business and SMSF accounting, because the best firm for a sole trader is rarely the best firm for a self-managed super fund.

What a firm needs to make our list
Registered
A registered tax agent on the TPB register, so it can legally charge to prepare and lodge returns.
Qualified
A principal who belongs to CA ANZ, CPA Australia or the Institute of Public Accountants.
Well reviewed
4.5 stars or better from at least 20 Google reviews on its local listing, refreshed every month.
Local
An office in the city it is listed for, with people you can meet, not just a landing page.
Match the accountant to the job
Tax returns
Wage earners, investors and landlords who want a return done properly: rental property schedules, capital gains on shares or crypto, work deductions and ATO letters.
Small business
Sole traders, partnerships, companies and trusts that need BAS and GST lodged, bookkeeping software set up, year-end accounts finished and advice on structure.
SMSF
Trustees setting up or running a self-managed super fund: annual accounts, the fund’s tax return, arranging the independent audit and keeping contributions inside the caps.
Before you pick a firm
Short answers to what people ask us most.
What does it cost to use Top 10 Accountants?
Nothing. Reading the lists and sending an enquiry is free. If you go ahead with a firm, you agree its fees with that firm directly, and we never quote prices for the firms we list.
How do you pick the ten firms in each city?
Each firm needs a registered tax agent on the Tax Practitioners Board register, a principal who belongs to CA ANZ, CPA Australia or the IPA, an office in that city and a Google rating of 4.5 or more from at least 20 reviews. We then write each listing from the firm’s own website and fact-check it a second time.
Can a firm pay to be on a list?
No firm pays for its place on our lists today, and the order is ours. If we ever offer featured spots, those firms will carry a clear “Featured” label and the page will say so.
What is the difference between a tax accountant and a small business accountant?
A tax accountant mainly prepares individual returns: wages, rental properties, shares and deductions. A small business accountant looks after a business’s structure, BAS and GST, payroll obligations, year-end accounts and company or trust returns. Many firms do both, which is why some names appear on more than one list.
Do I need a registered tax agent, or can any accountant do my return?
Only a tax practitioner registered with the Tax Practitioners Board can charge you to prepare or lodge a tax return. You can check anyone you are thinking of using on the TPB’s public register at tpb.gov.au before you sign up.
