Choosing an Accountant in Brisbane

Brisbane’s accounting firms sit in two main clusters. One runs from the CBD out through Fortitude Valley, Bowen Hills, Petrie Terrace and Toowong, where firms serve business owners who want to meet near the city. The other is spread through the suburbs, from The Gap in the west to Murarrie and Capalaba in the east and Eight Mile Plains in the south, where firms tend to know their local trades, retailers and families well.

Every firm here is a registered tax agent on the Tax Practitioners Board register. That matters because only a registered tax agent can charge you to prepare and lodge a tax return. A Queensland business with a growing payroll should also ask about payroll tax, which the Queensland Revenue Office charges once annual Australian taxable wages pass $1.3 million (as at October 2026).

Most Brisbane clients pick an accountant for one of three jobs: a personal return with a rental property or shares, the books and tax for a small business, or a self-managed super fund. Many firms on this list do all three, so it helps to say which matters most when you call. Our separate Brisbane lists for tax returns, small business and SMSF accounting narrow the field further.

Common Questions About Brisbane Accountants

10Brisbane Accountants compared
4.88Average Google rating
How do I choose an accountant in Brisbane?

Start with the job you need done, then check three things: the firm is a registered tax agent on the TPB register, it has done that kind of work for people like you, and its Google reviews are recent and consistent. Ask how fees are set before you sign up, whether you will deal with the same person each year and how quickly they reply to ATO letters.

How can I check a Brisbane accountant is registered?

Search the firm or the accountant by name on the Tax Practitioners Board public register at tpb.gov.au. It shows whether they are a registered tax agent or a BAS agent, their registration number and whether the registration is current. Only a registered tax agent can charge you a fee to prepare and lodge an income tax return.

What is the difference between a tax agent, a BAS agent and a Chartered Accountant?

A tax agent is registered with the TPB to prepare and lodge tax returns for a fee. A BAS agent is registered for a narrower set of services, such as BAS, GST and payroll reporting, but cannot lodge income tax returns. Chartered Accountant (CA), CPA and IPA are professional body memberships with their own education and ongoing training requirements.

When is my tax return due if I use a Brisbane accountant?

If you lodge yourself, an individual return is usually due on 31 October. If you are on a registered tax agent’s client list by 31 October, the ATO’s agent lodgment program usually gives you a later due date. Your accountant can confirm your exact date, which can be earlier if you have overdue returns from past years.

Does a Brisbane business need to pay Queensland payroll tax?

Only once its annual Australian taxable wages, including those of any grouped businesses, pass the Queensland threshold of $1.3 million (as at October 2026). The rate is 4.75% for employers paying $6.5 million or less in wages, set by the Queensland Revenue Office. An accountant can check grouping rules and which payments count as wages.

How did you choose these Brisbane accounting firms?

Each firm is a registered tax agent with a principal who belongs to CA ANZ, CPA Australia or the IPA, has an office in greater Brisbane and holds a Google rating of 4.5 or higher from at least 20 reviews. We wrote each listing from the firm’s own website and had it fact-checked again before publishing. No firm pays for its place.
